Media Breakthrough: An Idea Whose Time Has Come

With Time Magazine’s choice of “The Protester” as its “Person of the Year” we enter an era of breakthroughs in mainstream media.

With that choice, Time is saying that yes, people can use the media to make a difference. In fact, the protester phenomenon was so remarkable this year, that we in mainstream media are now saying this can no longer be denied. We will in fact acknowledge it and celebrate it. (Interesting to note that it is “Time” magazine that notes the “time” has come.)

And, lest the skeptics attempt to rationalize, it is not important that every protest movement “wins” — indeed, none of us know the ultimate outcome of these movements. What matters is that individuals are speaking up, and using media to make a difference. We now know that no matter how small the start, a protest brought to light in the media has the power to create a new reality on an epic scale. We have always believed it, and now we have seen it.

This is a breakthrough for humanity. We are arising from a sort of “societal coma” where we put up with media and other entities because we thought they were more powerful than us. Now we are seeing that we create what’s in the media. We create the new reality.

There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose Time has come.
